A paper about the AFORAS has been published in the Water journal. It is freely available at https://doi.org/10.3390/w10101420 or here. In this paper, we explain what the floodway is and FEMA’s requirements for encroachment limits that define the floodway. We also discuss how those requirements are formulated into a numerical objective function that can be minimized by the Isolated-Speciation-based Particle Swarm Optimization (ISPSO) R code and the way that the HEC-RAS Application Programming Interface (API) is integrated into the AFORAS for floodway optimization.
